Definition and scope
A derivative measures an instantaneous rate of change. An integral accumulates a quantity over an interval. A limit describes what a function approaches as its input gets arbitrarily close to some value. These three ideas are not independent inventions — limits define derivatives, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (published by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz independently in the late 17th century) establishes that differentiation and integration are inverse operations.

Limits are evaluated by asking: as x → a, does f(x) approach a finite value L? The formal ε-δ definition, standard in university-level analysis (NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions, Introduction), requires that for every ε > 0 there exists δ > 0 such that |f(x) − L| < ε whenever 0 < |x − a| < δ. In practice, most calculus courses use algebraic simplification, substitution, and L'Hôpital's Rule to evaluate limits without invoking ε-δ explicitly.
Derivatives formalize what happens to the limit of the difference quotient — (f(x+h) − f(x)) / h as h → 0 — when that limit exists. Leibniz notation writes this as dy/dx; Newton's notation uses f′(x). The power rule (d/dx [x^n] = n·x^(n−1)), the chain rule, the product rule, and the quotient rule together handle the vast majority of derivative computations in introductory courses.
Integrals come in two forms. The indefinite integral ∫f(x) dx produces a family of antiderivatives differing by a constant C. The definite integral ∫[a to b] f(x) dx produces a number — geometrically, the signed area between the function and the x-axis over the interval [a, b]. The three operations are causally ordered: limits are logically prior to both derivatives and integrals. Without a precise notion of limit, "instantaneous rate of change" is not a well-defined quantity — it's the paradox Zeno of Elea gestured at 25 centuries ago, now resolved by the ε-δ machinery.
Derivatives drive the study of optimization. Setting f′(x) = 0 identifies critical points where a function's rate of change is zero — the candidates for local maxima and minima. The second derivative test (f″(x) > 0 indicates concave up; f″(x) < 0 indicates concave down) classifies those candidates. Real vs. complex calculus. Complex analysis extends differentiation and integration to complex-valued functions. A function differentiable in the complex sense (holomorphic) is automatically infinitely differentiable — a dramatically stronger condition than real differentiability.
Standard vs. non-standard analysis. Abraham Robinson formalized infinitesimals rigorously in 1966, producing non-standard analysis as a logically equivalent alternative to ε-δ foundations. Both frameworks produce identical results; they differ in pedagogical and philosophical approach.
Tradeoffs and tensions
Integration is genuinely harder than differentiation in a technical sense: every elementary function has an elementary derivative, but not every elementary function has an elementary antiderivative. The function e^(−x²), fundamental to the normal distribution, has no closed-form antiderivative expressible in standard functions — its integral over (−∞, ∞) equals √π, a result requiring techniques from multivariable calculus or complex analysis to derive.
Numerical methods trade exactness for computability. Simpson's Rule and Gaussian quadrature approximate definite integrals to specified precision without finding antiderivatives. Automatic differentiation — used in machine learning frameworks — computes exact derivatives of composite functions by applying the chain rule mechanically through computational graphs, sidestepping symbolic differentiation entirely.
The tension between rigor and intuition runs through calculus pedagogy. Leibniz's notation dy/dx was designed to behave like a fraction (and often does, usefully), but treating it as an actual fraction produces errors in multivariable settings where the chain rule takes unfamiliar forms. Common misconceptions
Derivatives and slopes are the same thing. The derivative equals the slope of the tangent line at a point — but a derivative is a function, not a number, unless evaluated at a specific input. f′(x) is itself a function that assigns a slope to each x where the function is differentiable.
Differentiability implies continuity, so continuity implies differentiability. The first implication is true; the second is false. The absolute value function |x| is continuous everywhere but not differentiable at x = 0. The Weierstrass function, constructed in 1872, is continuous everywhere and differentiable nowhere — a result that disturbed most mathematicians of that era.
The indefinite integral and antiderivative are different objects. They are the same object. ∫f(x) dx is just notation for the general antiderivative F(x) + C.
L'Hôpital's Rule applies to all indeterminate forms. It applies to 0/0 and ∞/∞ forms — not directly to 0·∞, 0⁰, ∞⁰, or 1^∞ without algebraic conversion first.
Integration always means finding area. Definite integrals represent signed area — regions below the x-axis contribute negatively. A function that oscillates above and below the axis can have a definite integral of exactly 0 over a symmetric interval while enclosing substantial unsigned area.
